Otis, some clarification here. What I mean by surprise is the ENJOYMENT of first seeing a bud and, NOT knowing IMMEDIATELY (or having to know) what it is, relishing the day by day growth and eventual disclosure shared between you and your plant !!!!! Ok ? NOTHING ever escapes my watchful eye for more than a few days unless it's the hidden spike Camille mentioned.

I find it hilarious how many people daily on this forum HAVE to ask what this or that tiny green bump is when all they have to do is watch and wait !!!! That's the enjoyable worry-free way !!!

Yeah, but not knowing is sort of frustrating!! If I know someone on OB probably has the answer, why wait? Feels like a let down to let the anticipation build to discover it's 'just' a growth. Don't get me wrong, growths are very very good, but they don't give you the same high a spike does!

I gotta say, THANK YOU ALL !!!!

I think I just surpassed my lifetime record of laughing/year in these last ?, NOT even 2 months !!!

SERIOUSLY, I wouldn't think of leaving this forum unless the undertaker persuaded me !!! There should be a "chuckling" smilie because that's what I seem to never stop doing, not "rolling on the floor" but "chuckling" continuously !!! YOU'RE ALL GREAT !!!

Thank you all, again, for helping me stay in a great mood !!!

You want to laugh a bit more? Well I just went to give my guinea pig some more hay, and the bag sits on a table next to the windowsill. I accidently knocked it over, bent down to pick it up and as I got up my eye catches something on one of my orchids. My Pptm Mathina not only has a 6in spike on it, it has big fat buds ready to open!!
OK, it's hidden in the thick foliage, but I water it twice a week (so should have seen the spike!) and just last week I was looking at it wishing it would bloom soon.
Jeez I feel like a bad (blind?) orchid mommy!

EDIT: There are TWO spikes!

Oh yeah!! Basically I skipped the waiting and got to the good part: the blooms! Probably in a week or so.

Basically I think my point was missed. I'm just happy when something is growing. I never asked what it was popping out on my little Neofinetia, because I don't care! Yes, I've had my surprise, I'll have another suprise when I know what it is, but I could care less. Its new growth of some kind and the plant is letting me know its happy, or at least tolerant
As for people missing their plants blooming, whatever. Different storkes. I look at my plants so many times a day, NOTHING gets past me
When I no longer have the entusiasm I had that started this thread, I'll take up model railroading.
So, as long as my thread made you happy, my work here is done.
Good Growing and observing,
Tony
