Euanthe sanderiana blooming in a glass vase

"Called "Waling-waling" in the Philippines (sold as cut flower in floral arrangements) and is also called Sander's Euanthe, after Henry Frederick Conrad Sander, a noted orchidologist. The orchid is revered and is worshiped as a diwata(deity) by the native Bagobo tribe in the southern islands.
Heinrich Gustav Reichenbach originally named Euanthe sanderiana as Vanda sanderiana.
It has two forms, pink and white, also referred to as alba. M. Roebelin discovered the original pink variety in the Philippines in 1881 or 1882. Rudolf Schlechter separated Euanthe from Vanda in 1914 due to structural differences in the flowers. For breeding purposes and registration by the Royal Horticultural Society, however, it is still treated as a Vanda.
Euanthe sanderiana is endemic to Mindanao where it is found on the trunks of dipterocarp trees at elevations below 500 meters. Over-collected, the plant is considered rare in nature. It is often used in hybridization.

This is hung on my fire escape bareroot in the summer (NYC has heat and humidity that vandacious love)watered twice a day and soaked for 5 min in seaweed and worm tea mix and then in winter it is placed inside a large glass vase with large coconut chip, clay, charcoal and lava rocks media at the center of my bathroom window. It is hand sprayed everymorning and once a week soaked for 5 min in a mixture of worm tea and seaweed mix in a large basin.
I use a diamond coated drill and glass must be at least 1mm under water for the drill not to overheat...once I learned to drill holes in glass...I repot most of my plants in glass especially those I put in S/H method

Bud - Very well done, sanderiana can be differcult to bloom, especially growing in a NYC apt. Knowing how small NYC apts can be, it amused me that you have a drill to make holes in glass for your Vandas, signs of a true "Orchid Addict". We are so very proud of you.

This plant is 9 yrs and 7 months old...it is 7 yrs in my care and was given to me by a very close friend from California who got it from a Filipino who handcarried it from Cebu City Philippines on a vacation; it was out of 11 small seedlings given away to the other close friends as a token gift.
The longest leaf is 14 inches and the leafspan of this palnt is 28 inches
It is 22 inches from the base to the tip of the tallest flower.
The roots starting from the base of the plant is 4 ft to the longest root. ( I have to carefully curl the root to position inside the vase and carefully add the media mix)

Bud, I'm VERY technically able but have to ask if you can explain how you're drilling under 1mm of water ? Is the drill inside the vase and the water in the vase ? That would work for hole #1. I would be thinking to drill from the bottom but just can't picture HOW you do that !!???? Help appreciated ! TIA !

get a big pail of water and immerse the whole vase with its base on the level of the water; make sure that only 1mm of water must be the level that the drill can be touching...or else water and electricity is not a very good combination to work with...

you may also go outdoors and invert the glass vase on the grass lawn or on dirt(for cushion effect)...use a wet sponge to let the drill touch so not to overheat

you may also go to Youtube and search videos on drilling holes on glass and you will find lots of videos there...just choose the ones that will work for you...some of the videos are crazy LOL
