Default New to neos! Where to buy?

Hi everyone!

I'm new to neos and OB, but not orchids in general. I actually just discovered them today, and I've fallen in love with the history of these beauties. I bought a 'Suzumushi' and 'Higashidemiyako' from japaneseorchids on ebay. It's so exciting!

Now I know about Glenn Lehr's site, New World Orchids, Orchids Limited, and seed-engei.com, but are there any other online shops I could try?

I also found an orchid at greeny-pottery on ebay that I really like, but I'm in the US. Does anyone know about importing from the UK to US?

Boy these little guys are expensive, but I absolutely love them already! I'm keeping my fingers crossed for another one, hehe.

Oh yeah, does anyone know where I could obtain a 'Hisui' and/or a 'Benihichou?'

*edit* I've created a wanted listing, so if anyone from the board is willing to sell, please check it out and contact me!

Hi raindance, new to neos here, too. Don't know of other places, but I'm sure other more knowledgeable people will chime in. I got mine from Glenn at New World Orchids.

Both orchidweb.com and Glenn have Hisui. Email Glenn about Benihichou - I bet he can get them for you.

Thanks rangiku, I emailed Glenn before going to bed last night. I haven't been able to find a Benihichou anywhere, but Glenn has Benisuzume and Hisui according to his site. It's easy to mix some of these guys up because the names are similar, haha.

Glenn goes to Japan each year for the Grand Prix orchid show at the Tokyo Dome and brings plants back with him.

A lot of us do pre-orders before the show. It's best to call as you will want to discuss how large a plant you want and how much you're willing to spend.

Here's a link to the orchid show Japan Grand Prix International Orchid Festival 2011

You can also go to Flickr and search the show for some absolutely amazing pics.

Cheers.
Jim

Don't mean to be long winded, but here goes...

Seikaihana comes immediately to mind.

Fuukiden is another

Or anything from the top 3 rows of the Meikan. Meikan thread

It depends on what you're looking for. I've been into Neos for 3 years and started out with inexpensive common stock like the typical form, Amami Island, Tamakongo, and such. As I learned more about them I discovered I favour red/pink flowered varieties, variegated plants, and bean leaf plants and started getting more expensive plants. So far I've been able to satisfy my cravings with existing US stock, but I'll soon be reaching the point where I will have to ask Glenn to bring something back for me. Especially when I start seriously considering a variegated bean-leaf. The best places to find out about the latest and greatest plants are speaking with Glenn and Jason, here with fellow member posts, and books on Neos. Glenn and Jason both sell Japanese books on Neos like "Famous Neofinetia Flowers 2008" which I just picked up from Glenn at the Merritt Huntington Symposium. Glenn includes a naming sheet with the book that translates the plant names from Japanese to English. When I see something I really like, I'll research it on the net as much as I can and talk to Glenn since he's my primary "dealer". Some of them he's told me flat out that it may take a couple of years until it becomes common enough in Japan that his sources can get it and the price would likely be over $1,000.

Cheers.
Jim

Neat, thanks for the info Jim!

Does anyone have info on Yubae? I guess it's supposed to be similar to Yuhime, according to Satomi's site. Glenn has/had some listed, so I guess I should just give him a call...

pcr, here is a good place to start to learn about the Japanese orchid neofinetia falcata:
Neofinetia falcata -- samurai orchid

Jim, thanks for the info, especially the link to the Meikan. The fuukiden is gorgeous, but at $1590 out of my price range.
