I collect fragrant plants and inevitably have just started to get some orchids so I really don't know too much about their fragrance yet .
I just bought a Neostylis Fuchs Ocean Spray because the
pictures I have seen of the flowers are beautiful, but was wondering if the fragrance is anything like Neostylis 'Lou Sneary'.
sambacmouse:
I'm wondering this too; if the fragrance of 'Fuchs Ocean Spray' is similar to that of 'Lou Sneary.'
How similar are they in other features?
Just got 'Lou Sneary' and was considering picking up 'Fuchs Ocean Spray.'
Mine is growing really well, but still hasn't flowered so I can't help you, but I think it's a 'lou sneary' backcrossed with the rhy. coelestis.
I say get it.
Picked up an untagged plant from ebay-seller called
Neostylis Fuchs Ocean Spray? in bloom.
Blooms are a little chunkier than Lou Sneary Blue Bird
Has nice fragrance.
Thanks for that bit of information, the chunkier flowers must be due to the coelestis influence.
I have moved mine to a place that gets more light, hopefully it will now decide to bloom when the weather warms up a bit.
hey sambacmouse. i grow both and am a scent hound lol. so i can answer this question. rhy. coelestis has a floral lily like fragrance and neofinetia varies to me depending on the type but id say a combination of marshmallow, (yes, marshmallow lol. most people say vanilla but it is sweeter than that.), and some type of lily(id guess casablanca lily). ive sniffed all of the neo crosses and they all vary depending on the individual plant. my neostylis bluebird, pinky and bluemoon all smell more like its rhy. coelestis parent but i have another lou sneary that smells like cookie dough! so its taken more of its neofinetia parent. a fuch's ocean spray is backcrossed into rhy. coelestis again so im sure it smells more floral which i know mine does. and the flowers have more its rhyn. c. parents clustering growth pattern. hmmm ynow i wonder if it has anything to do with which parent was the pollen donor etc. which determines scent as well as the dominant physical characteristics. anyway i hope i answered your question.
