Hoshiguruma is a spurless variety with plain green leaves. Had 7 buds this year. Dropped it on the floor and broke off two. There is also a tiger variegated type with spurless flowers called Kinboshi. Tsukenashi is another contorted leaf variety with the twisted axis.
Kinkounishiki has the shima (distinct bands/stripes) variegation and very thick leaves so takes bright light better than others. Tensyou has more of the cream/ light green variegation. This along with Orihime seems a bit more fragrant than others.
Fugaku is an example of the spread variegation. Akebono doesn't get many flowers per spike but innate variegation on this variety is very cool. These can be variable. Most of these have some full green leaves but if lucky, you might find one with all cream leaves and very thin green margins. Often times these ones are given a new name, Oborzuki. Akebono's roots emerge bright pinkish purple and change to green.
Kansetsu is VERY touchy about brighter light. This is one of the varieties with the true white variegation, instead of cream like some others. The white parts of the leaf are much thinner than the green part so it gets purple or burns very easily. I have to start growing this in lower light as mine is not very pretty right now. Thanks for looking.
I really like the white variegated varieties like your Kansetsu.
Are there other varieties that you've found more fragrant like Tensyou?
Cheers.
Jim
Jim, I can tell you right now, if you get Kansetsu, Marlene must never find out about it. You might be banished to the living room couch. Well, I haven't smelled that many of them yet, but of the 40 some that I have, it's hands down to Orihime. That one sometimes made me sneeze. Ushiwakamaru is also very fragrant and the scent is completely different from the other neos. It smells like some kind of Chinese Cymbidium Jason's had me sniff before at OL. Setzusan is also pretty fragrant and smells more jasminey compared to the others.
Thanks for all the nice comments from everyone. Anders, I'm excited to see your babies blooms too, epecially the new ones you're getting this season
