Hello fellow neo groupies!

I figured I'd intoduce myself a bit by answering your questions in this thread since neos are by far my favs ...
1)Who got you into Neos or how did you get into them?
-I bought one on ebay when I first decided to get into growing orchids. I used to only grow nepenthes and wanted something else to fill in my terrarium, also orchids are a kind of a family hobby so I had some good info to start, then my aunt gave me two neos when my kitten ate the first one I bought(argh). Now orchids are taking over the terrarium rather than being filler
2)Why do you love them?
-the foliage and roots. They are so little and cute blooms are just a bonus. I also have to agree with everyone who said the history and culture attached to growing them, which I only found out about as I was researching how to care for them.
3)Which ONE in your current collection is your absolute favorite? (yes, just ONE )
-at the moment? 'White Tara x Crystal Palace' because its growing some roots that are so much longer than the the size of the foliage it's almost comical
4)If you won the lottery today and price was no issue, which ones would you MUST have?
-can I answer one of each lol? maybe Kibana Yamadori or one that has flowers with 3 spurs

Hello,
I joined this board in June but have not posted before.
A particular interest of mine are the fuukirans, and I note that this board has quite a few aficionados of this species and its special varieties.
Why do I like them? The variety, intriguing in their slight genetic drifts which give rise to so many variations. The specificity and specialization, which takes note of the sometimes subtle differences which mark one variety from another. The general beauty of the species and varieties, the artistry inherent in growing beautiful plants let alone specimens - orchid bonsai in the best ways, calling upon one's discrimination in terms of symmetry/dis-symmetry, balance, proportion, color, texture, detail, and composition.
Here is a link to a gallery of most of my fuukiran plants. It excludes the more 'common' Neofinetias (fuuran) as well as the many Neo crosses of various types I also have. MobileMe Gallery
Regards,
Huiray.

Huiray,
You have a very nice collection! Where do you grow your fuukiran at, what kind of environment, window, greenhouse, etc? What part of the world are you in and who have you purchased most of your plants from? How many do you presently grow? Good to see you posting.
BTW, there is not a plural form in the Japanese language. You would just say fuukiran.

Steve,
Indeed. Plural forms in Japanese do not quite exist, similarly to Chinese. I merely thought that it would read better to English speakers to append the 's'. Do you read Japanese or Chinese?
I grow my fuukiran in a cold sunny cold room in winter, in an intermediate room or outdoors in summer. My plants (over many years) have come from NWO, Orchids Ltd, Cal-Orchids, and a Japanese grower/supplier. I'm in Indianapolis. I haven't counted how many I have in a while.
Huiray.

I read quite a bit of Japanese words and have practiced calligraphy for some 30 years. Why don't you post a photo of your growing room, I'd love to see it?

Hello, Tom.
Steve, I don't have a pic of my growing area as such, particularly as regards to my fuukiran. Perhaps later.
Cheers,
Raymond.

Hi Phyrex and JungleMel! Thanks for sharing your replies. When I started this thread last Fall, I had no idea it would get to be 7 pages long. OB has LOTS of Neo fans
Welcome to OB, Huiray. I do remember reading your many neo posts on some other forums a few years back. I think you posted a copy of your 2008 Fuukiran Meikan last year on OSF. That was cool, thanks!
Thanks for sharing your photos with us. You must be a hard core fan to have Fuukiden, Mangetsu, Suisen, Kinbotan and Maizuru in your collection. Do you have any shima variegated bean leaf ones? Or are you planning to get one?

Tracy,
It's a compliment to me that you remember my posts elsewhere, thanks. Yes, I posted copies of the Fuukiran Meikan for 2008 and 2007 on OSF, as well as links to many other Fuukiran websites. If people are interested, I could upload high-res scans of some Meikan charts I have and post the link to them.
I guess I do like these plants. :-) I don't have a shima bean-leaf variety as yet, perhaps one day.
Tom & Steve,
Thanks for your kind words.
Raymond.
