Bean leaf? - Orchid Board

this is probably a stupid question, but is this a "bean leaf" variety? i got it a couple weeks ago, and i thought it was the standard type.

If it is anything it is a bean leaf type - but it looks more like a Sedirea than a Neofinetia to me.... judging by the leaf tips.

Was it sold as Neofinetia?

yes, it was sold as neofinetia. i've never seen it in bloom, but the seller offered to show me a picture. maybe it's a hybrid? i almost want to go back to the seller and ask to see the picture, but it's about 60 miles from here, so i guess i'll just wait until it blooms. if it turns out to be sedirea, it's still a good purchase, i wanted one of those too. i was told that the flowers were all white, which would be unusual for sedirea i think. kinda makes me wonder, though. and i kinda wonder about the seller, none of the other orchids there were labeled, and they didn't seem to take very good care of them. these 2 had root rot when i got them, and tiny white bugs on them. i had to cut off the bad roots and treat them with cinnamon, but they seem to be doing ok now. i'll post pictures if they ever bloom.

You are right, Sedirea are awesome plants as well - so I wouldn't be disappointed with one. And yes, all white flowers would be quite unusual for a Sedirea.

I can't wait to see its blooms!! Sound like the plant will be much happier in your care - and has a chance at a good life. Otherwise, it would have probably been a gonner for sure. Keep an eye on it though, as if it had something like mealy bugs, they might be hiding in the cracks deep down in the leaves. You may find that you will see a few more before you can be sure the plant is 'clean'. Also, keep this one away from your other orchids until you are sure there is nothing wrong with it - the last thing that you want is for it to infect the rest of your plants.

That doesn't look like a Neo to me either. . .betcha it IS a Sedirea! I wouldn't be a bit disappointed!

Looks like it's doing very well in your care! I can't wait to see blooms!

they did have bugs hiding in the cracks, but i gently pulled it open enough to get the bugs out. i had to remove a couple leaves from one of them, it's not doing so good. the other one (the front one in the pot) is doing quite well, or at least it's putting out a lot of new roots. i'll move them to seperate pots soon. i think they'll both live. can't wait to see them bloom, but they're not in spike yet.

i'll post some pictures of them when i take them out of the pot, to show the roots and everything.

a quick update:
it turns out that they were Sedirea, the standard variety. still a good purchase, they have a wonderful scent to them.

Beautiful Sedirea! If you're still looking for Neofinetia, and don't mind a trip to San Francisco, there's a little plant store in Japantown that always has a selection. It's called Katsura Garden. I have to limit my trips there, because I always come home with some new variety of Neo.

I've heard of Katsura Garden, and I'll probably visit them next time I'm in SF.
