I've been a little scared to try the neo although I want one badly. If I keep reading the posts here, I'm going to cave in, I just know it.

Hi Sandy,

I've never purchased anything from Cal Orchids but I've heard good things about them.

I've gotten all my special Neos from Glenn at New World Orchids.

But I bought my first, standard form, Neo online from an Ebay seller. It was a really super healthy one with great roots. These are not costly and have really beautiful flowers. And are a great beginning variety to start learning about them and they're not too expensive! I think mine was around $15.00.

Takes the scary right out of caving in. . .I tell ya!

Thank you, Gwen! I try to pick plants for others that I would want for myself. That's easy, but it seems to work!

Go for Seikai first. You will love it all of the time. Shunkyudan is one that you should have, but it looks rather plain when not in flower. And you will have to talk to Glenn about the Tennyono-Hai. If he has one or is able to find one, make sure he finds a couple so that he can bring me one next time!! LOL!

I love Paph tigrinim, too! I hope you get one. I haven't tried one yet, as I seem to struggle to make the green leaved Paphs happy. Mottled leaf ones are fine, but only one green leaf Paph our of quite a few that I have tried has done even remotely well.

I just love orchids!

I love raising seedlings! The excitement of seeing them grow (I was told that Paph seedlings like to be repotted frequently - i.e. every 6-9 months when they are very young - and will go through a growth spurt each time you do it!). And then there is the excitement of seeing their flowers for the very first time! As long as you have other more mature plants that will flower reliably, it really pays to have the time and patience for flowering out some seedlings!

no, really, Shannan is doinggreat with the plants, and every time I come to her with a request, we discuss for a long time about the different options, and as always, I end up with different plants as originally planned, and also with more than originally plant... I think that's exactly what I like the most from Shannan

I know bigger department stores have personal shoppers and the like... I wonder if I could get a job as an orchid personal shopper?!

I have one that is labelled Hakuhou Fukurin - it was my Neo Project plant. I wonder if it is the Hakuhou that is on the list? I will try to grow some new roots to see!!

I have two books here, so I will try and look up some names in those as well. Maybe we should start an index thread for ruby and red tipped roots?

Sandy, you should get one!! In my opinion, they are one of the easiest orchids to grow. Mine has been tolerating a wide range of conditions since I got them in may and throughout all these changes there have been many new roots, leaves and growths appearing. Hopefully I should see some gorgeous blooms next year!!
