variegated neos in bloom

Well an Amami Island is a must buy and I want to get a bean leaf type but haven't decided on which yet other than the old axiom "When in doubt, get one of each".

I really, really like Seikai and it is on the top of my wish list, but ouch, I've never spent that kind of money on a plant before, not even on trees for the garden. That'll definately be down the pike as a Christmas/birthday/anniversary/father's day/grandparent's day gift.

Yes, Shannan made me do it! And boy-o am I happy I did it! I got my two plants today from New World Orchids and I am TOTALLY in orchid heaven. Pics to follow in a new thread this weekend!

I think my next one will be the Shunkyuden . .and a moniliforme.

I actually ran across a single specimen of a basic Neo yesterday at a local orchid greenhouse for a very good price. I snapped it up and actually carried it around the greenhouses for awhile until I remembered my wife made me promise not to come home with any more plants this month. It was sooooo hard putting it back on the bench.

I've had to do that. . .believe it or not. . .put back an orchid that I really really wanted. It took all my will power to unclench my fingers from around its little pot and put it back.

You have my empathy, my sympathy and my respect. You're a better person that I am. Because to be honest, having done that a couple of times, I now just sneak the plants in.

Or else they just show up mysteriously.

The Amami is gorgeous. . .a real classic Neo.

His division sure is gorgeous. Unfortunately, Orihime is one of the variable variegated neos. So I think a lot of them will look like the one Shannan has. Tom Velardi's division is probably much harder to find and might have cost him his first born on ebay.

But I do have these two on the way from New World Orchids. . .might get them tomorrow!

Kinkosei (white flowers, nearly transparent spots on the leaves)
Seiryujushi (white flowers, contorted pine needle type foliage)

I vote for Unkai! ....because I don't have that one and I want to see what Glenn's look like.

Sekai is a great one to get. I heard it might need a bit more "babying" in the winter though. Something about it having "southern blood".

I think the other thing to think about is that he states that none of the other growths of the plant that he got this division from were quite as variegated.

Also, there is no guarantee that new growths from this one will be as variegated. They could - and most likely will - come out with a lot more green.

Shakkai is right. Variegation is generally affected by changes in growing conditions and environment. When a plant is stressed or under less than ideal conditions variegated plants will produce greener leaves....similar response to flowering less under similar changes.

Variegation in orchids always amazes me, physiologically it is so stressful on the plant. It's like being in flower all the time, and then when you consider the conditions that orchids grow under in the wild....wow.
