Gwen, do you mean the Kanji (the chinese characters used the the japanese language)? Those are the characters in the Fuukiran Meikan. You mean that?

I'm very curious and excited to find out what you decide to add to your collection next!! I stopped trying to look up specific ones the last couple times I went to the nursery. Now I just give Jason some vague description of what I'm looking for and he justs picks out some neos to show me in the cool room. I've gotten lazy with my research.

I have no flippin idea!

I've only seen Becca's Fuukiran Meikan. . .part of her NWO prizes.

I got the characters from a Japanese person, so I don't know, maybe they aren't Japanese? But are Chinese?

I am still squirreling around trying to figure out what the Neo. terms mean. You know, they're NOT in English.

For example, I just added to my list of Neo. "facts".

Jiku: axis, stem, shaft, axle.
Fuukarin: wealth & rank orchid

If anybody has any more facts I can pin down to sort these Neos. . .I am standing by to receive enlightenment.

Gwen, you're hilarious . Ok, I may not be the best at explaining this but here goes...

The Japanese language uses many Chinese characters. Most of the characters on the sumo wrestler chart thing (Fuukiran Meikan) are Chinese characters. Some of them are Japanese characters though. For example, Gekkeikan, has 3 characters. The literal translation of the 1st character is "moon", 2nd character is "cinnamon". These 2 characters together mean "laurel". The 3rd character means "crown". Hence, Gekkeikan = Laurel Crown.

Jiku, I think is the stem/axis but tsuke is the connection point between the leaves and the axis. That "line" can be straight, crescent (cupped), wavy or mountain shaped (like the pic I have on flickr on one of my neos).

Fuukiran can be split up as 3 characters.
fuu = wealth or rich
ki = rank or noble
ran = orchid
Hence, fuukiran = orchid of the rich & noble

Some of the Japanese and Chinese words sound similar. So in Japanese it's "foo ki ran" while in Chinese (cantonese) it's "foo kwai lan".

I'm not sure how Glenn has his neos labeled but Seed Engai has the kanji and the Japanese name. Jason has the Japanese name and the English translation on the tags (some also have the kanji as well).

Are you more confused yet?

No. . .wistful happiness & surprise. . .I actually understand what you are saying! Gawd, you're good.

Well, I understood all you said except for the bit about how the first two characters for Gekkeikan #1 moon + #2 cinnamon = laurel! I get the part about how laurel + crown = Gekkeikan. What can I say, I have a lot to learn.

Okay, so what I want to photograph then, as a distinguishing feature, is the tsuke? That's the part that has so many variations. The jiku is basically just where the leaves attach to the stem. . .not so interesting.

Gonna have to go edit in yet another change to my Neo posting format!

Jumping back in to request clarification:

So, the character combinations are quite interpretative, really. . .kind of like poetry. . .multi-layered individual meanings that can be combined to create a deeper meaning. . .or a more "concise" meaning using picture combinations? How cool is that?

There are some threads elsewhere that have the Meikan - and translations!

Neo's ranking system -

I have one - not sure what year it is from - but also have the translation of variety names that goes with it.
