Neofinetia/Vanda falcata Ogwan '오관 (烏冠)'

Got this guy from DavesGardenObsession on Etsy. Came bare root and the roots looked great. I didn't need to snip any off.

This Korean variety presents both sumi and fukurin, as you can kind of see the fukurin on at least one leaves. I imagine being in the dark for a few days didn't help keep the fukurin in the leaves. Could also be a variety where mature leaves turn solid green, I'm not sure. It's hard finding information about lesser known varieties.

This is also my first attempt at doing the traditional moss mound in a K35 Neo pot. Not bad but I definitely could've made it a bit more neat/cleaner.
Let it stay dry for a few days and then just wanted it early this morning along with the rest of the orchids that needed to be watered.

This variety is apparently has Amami parentage, so it'll supposedly have bigger flowers.

The most I can find to what Ogwan '오관' (烏冠) means is something in Buddhism. Something to do with crowns or 5 points.

being in the dark a few days or weeks won't affect fukurin variegation (or shima for that matter). I believe this variety is "sumi fukurin". edges can get dark sumi. it's not a typical bright yellow/white fukurin variety.

I don't grow this one but I have another Korean sumi fukurin where the edges start yellow/white and then with good light they turn into dark sumi with age.

your typical Amami plant has larger flowers. but there has been so much breeding from Amami plants that all sorts of plants have arisen out of amami stock. bean leaves, all types of variegation, tiny spiky varieties, etc.

Ah, that makes sense. You can sort of see it in the pictures...kind of. I really need to find better lighting to take pictures of my plants.

Yea I've seen a bunch of varieties from international sellers have "Amami" before "Sumi" or "Shima", so I guess even the wild types have a large variety of mutations.

yes neofinetia is a wacky genus and mutations are plentiful. which is why many of the newer distinctive Amami varieties are not wild-collected plants, but rather come from selfings and other crosses from Amami-derived stock.

It's kind of like how Venus Fly Traps have a ton of variations between plants. Except there's only one species in the genus Dionaea, Dionaea muscipula..

Maybe that's why I like Neos so much, they're similar in the sense that one species is so varied.

I think a lot of people are attracted to this single species due to the fantastic variability. what's also truly amazing is how an expert can very frequently distinguish a variety based on a couple high quality photos. uncanny.
