Tōyōden is the shima variegated "parent" of the better known naka-fu variety, Akebono. It is a parent to Akebono not due to seed propagation, but Akebono is rather a "morph" of Toyoden, where the genetically different populations of cells in the meristem have simply taken on different arrangements over time.
Toyoden itself is known for its fairly thick dark green stripes on a grainy or gritty looking base of yellowish or whitish pale green.
Toyoden's records date back to before the 1880s, and is recorded to have originally been found in the wild in the Tokyo area.
