Taiga Information Request

Last year, a deer ate all the white tiger stripe leaf parts off my first Taiga, leaving only the green. I suppose I should be grateful that it didn't eat the whole thing, but now, a year later, it has greatly increased in size, but has not developed any new white variegation. The light levels in my greenhouse were high enough to burn some plants until I put up the shade cloth earlier this month. Despite the very strong light, there is very little red in the leaves. Its saving grace was a very nice display of bright purple-red roots this spring.

I purchased a second Taiga from Diamond Orchids recently, but unlike the first, it has very little white banding. I'd like it to grow more.

Two questions:
1) How is Taiga best grown to develop the most white, yellow-white, and purple-red color.

2) Is there a Korean description at pungnan.or.kr If so, I couldn't find it.

I have seen the posts your refer to (I search here for various reasons several times every week). Searching for the name "Taiga" should turn up the post you're thinking of if it indeed has information about Taiga.

I can't provide much in the way of personal experience with the variety, but to help with your research, it may be useful to mention that whatever cultural conditions recommended for Hokage also go for Taiga. Both of them are derived from the same sibling population, with the only difference being size and leaf posture.

That said, I was told that both varieties need particular attention to light.

• Too much light and it won't produce any white sectors.
• Too little light, and the leaves will produce white sectors, but the leaves will grow long and flimsy (etiolated).
• Once any white sectors develop, too much light will burn them badly.
• Red pigmentation is supposed to be enjoyed as a seasonal characteristic during the spring when the temperatures are still low but the plant is beginning to grow. Attempting to bring out pigmentation year round by blasting it with high light will cause the above problems associated with too much light.
