To make this info more accessible, I have decided to post it again with its own title.
Instead of the traditional sphag mound, I have found this method easy and far more long lasting. If watered and fed properly, it can last 5 or more years without replacing. Excessive watering and or feeding will promote breakdown of the medium.
2/3 Orchiata Classic bark, 1/3 South or Central American tree fern, medium shred manually broken down to 1/2” to 5/8” lengths. Do not buy fine shred or use New Zealand tree fern, it will not provide the aeration which is the purpose of the tree fern addition. DO NOT ADD ANY SPHAG TO THE MIX, IT WILL RETARD THE AERATION AND ROT.
Here is a source of tree fern, it is hard to find.
