I would use considerably less sphag so you could see emerging new root activity.

Receptacle perfect. At this point plant does not need to be vertical. Horizontal is fine. Just some sphag at base so you can see what’s going on. Tip slightly receptacle after spaying to drain or at least get any puddle away from plant.

Advise for future, surgery best done if possible manually by snapping, if not by sterile one sided razor blades, but be super careful,
I've cut myself several times. One doesn’t hear much about viruses in Neofinetias but why take a chance?

I guess it’s too late haha but thanks for the advice. I was too worried about possibly damaging the other growths by snapping the dead growth by hand but I understand the reason why it may be preferred.

I’ll remove some of the moss and put a piece of paper to tip the lid a little bit as well as laying the plant on its side.

Given that it is winter and the plant may be asleep, would I need to wait a while before new roots appear?

Hard to say how soon new roots will start. It’s possible within a few weeks. Be patient, the plant will do what it believes is best for it.

Put the paper or cardboard under the receptacle at one side for a slant to drain excess water away from plant.

Do not allow leaves to sit in a puddle of water. This will cause them to rot. To avoid this, use plastic toothpicks or segments of drinking straws to elevate. Perhaps you can use the receptacle rim for this.

As far as the sphag, I recommend a 1/4” layer under the base and just some pieces of sphag sprinkled on top with 65% visibility of roots below.
