Vanda fungal infection? Male
Default Vanda fungal infection?

Hi.My name is George and i am from Greece.

I was keeping orchids some years back but due to luck of time i had given away my plants. Now i have started again keeping.

Yesterday i got from an online store here in Greece a Vanda. The plant doesn't look good at all to me, i called them and sent them photos of the plants and i am waiting for an answer..

The root system is bad and also the leaves on the base looking yellow and wilted. The rest of the leaf section don't look that bad.
Sprayed with hydrogen peroxide the base of the plant and saw lots of bubbling...

I am putting some photos, whats your opinion? Do you think its a fungal infection?

I will add one photo of the whole plant later,it's in flower right now. Also another strange thing about this plant is the number of old flower stems has on.I never seen before a vanda with so many..maybe is a plant used for production of cut flowers and they mess with the plant with hormones and temperatures to produce flowers and later they sell for nothing to dealers those plants? (sounds paranoid theory but..)

thank you!

I agree the base of the plant doesn’t look good; I wouldn’t be happy either. If you end up keeping it, the upper part of the plant and roots don’t look terrible. I’d do a soak of the roots monthly with a kelp based root stimulant and water by letting the roots soak while keeping the base of the plant dry.

My Vandas have responded vigorously to Kelpmax: dormant roots start growing and all the roots start branching. My hope would be that you could jumpstart root growth and hopefully the plant would have time to throw some new roots above the infection so that you could salvage the top if worse comes to worse.

Do you keep some fungicides for orchids? If not, then could order a few to keep in the orchid first aid kit. I keep thiomyl (apparently same sort of stuff as cleary's 3336), yates anti-rot phosacid (similar to agri-fos systematic), mancozeb, and a copper spray. I have other ones too in the kit, like Captan. I rarely have to use them - or pretty much never have to use them for treating fungal infections - but always have something - just in case.

I did have to use some yates anti-rot to treat some minor rot on catasetum leaves/stems last year - treated very successfully. So having supplies on hand - waiting in the wings - can be super helpful.
