Gwen, I think you've got a root there, a spike would be all green. Good luck with the moss, though, looks like you've got the makings of a nice mossy mount!

That is your articulata. In addition to the roots being distinctly different, the leaves are also quite different.

Roots will always be smooth as they emerge, spikes and new growths will be layered (like scales) and thinner.
