Choosing an angraecoid! Help! :( Male
Default Choosing an angraecoid! Help! :(

Hi guys! I'm looking for a high light, compact angraecoid that doesn't mind intermediate temperatures and is also beginner friendly. So anything that is angraecum, aerangis, aeranthes or mystacidium. I'm not an expert on species, so I'm not sure what will do best! Help! I need to treat myself after this week. hehehe.

Angraecum magdalenae. Can take cooler temperatures in the winter and can take hotter temperatures in the summer, easy to grow, can spend its entire life in a six-inch pot, doesn't get huge, can take high light or shade. Through everything, it does enjoy its water, even in the cooler temperatures.
The flower lasts a very long time and is fragrant during the day and more so at night. Blooms twice a year.

Note: I grow this in red lava rock and a six-inch basket pot.

I nearly forgot....Angraecum Leonis is very, very easy. I usually forget I have the two of them because, well, they are so undemanding. These are smaller than the mag and easier to find. I have no idea what their light requirement is, though. They seem to grow wherever I put them for the summer or winter. The blooms are a bit more fussy...when the buds get a certain size, they need a little more humidity (but you can't get them wet).
I grow these in very small net pots/LECA with a little moss on top.
They are fine with cooler winter temperatures and hot summers, too. The mag can take full sun but I am not so sure about these.

I think all of the conventional choices have been listed. Some of the rarer ones that would fit in are Angraecum scottianum, Jumellea cormorensis, and (if you can adjust it to your lighting) Aeranthes grandiflora. A rather adaptable and compact hybrid is Angraecum Lemforde White Beauty, you should definitely check that one out.

Angraecum didieri is a good one. Not sure of its taste in lighting but mine are doing quite well right now under my lights with the other high light plants.

Thanks everyone for the information and suggestions! I think I'm going to try out an Angraecum scottianum or germinyanum because of their vine-like compact growth. That and/or a Angraecum didieri/elephantinum or... leonis, whichever is the cheapest when I decide to do my next big order! And maybe a Mystacidium capense... I only have space for one, so I'll still be deciding~ It's so hard.

What did you end up getting? I'm just curious because I've recently acquired a few angraecoids (including a Mystacidium capense) and I'm wondering what you chose and how it's going.

I got an Ang. didieri! I have an Ang. leonis on my list to order for after I move and after the project plant gets chosen (hopefully soon)! I'll probably be getting a Mystacidium capense as well. The larger Angraecums will have to wait until I have more space and after I get Ang. culture down like I do Dendrobiums! My hope in the distant future is to have a Ang. sesquipedale and Ang. eburneum (and it's variants) in specimen sizes, so.... slowly but surely!

Good luck! I have an Ang. sequipedale, and so far it's pretty easy to take care of, even with less than optimal conditions. I'll have to check out Ang. didieri. :-)
