angraecum sesquipedale 'Crowning Glory' x superbum var. longicalcar '
I just bought my first Angraecum yesterday. I know I should have gotten one before, it just did not happen till now. Sesquipedale 'Crowning Glory' x superbum var. longicalcar 'Waimanalo'. It is in spike now and I am looking forward to see it bloom and smell it.
The seller I got it from said shade and ignore it. I am sure there is something else I need to know about. Right now, it is in my sun room, along with all the other orchids. The temperature is at 65, there is humidifier running at all time. Lights are on 14 hours a day.
Suggestions?
In late February, I will be moving to Miami, what should I do then, get it out of its container. The seller did mention I should place in a basket in the Spring.
Thank you everybody

Sounds like it will be fantastic! It will likely love Miami as the climate is most like the part of Madagascar where they grow (lowlands).
Sesquipedale likes sun, heat, and a fast-draining but often watered medium but I don't know much about superbum. I like to give my angraecums extra calcium and they like good air circulation. Good luck with it!

thanks Leafmite. I will have to keep it strong till february. I will move it to a basket then, or tie it up to a tree. Would it 'attach' itself to the tree if I did. Till then, I will treat it very much like a vanda and hope for the best. Some of my orchids seem to thrive inside but my vandas probably need more heat to bloom. Hopefully, this one will bloom again and have more spikes next year.

The conditions you mentioned should be fine for this hybrid. It's basically a version of Angraecum Veitchii, but using the variety longicalcar of Ang eburneum might impart some cool tolerance (longicalcar itself--unlike the other varieties of eburneum--is not a lowland species, and prefers cooler night temperatures). Both of the parents (sesquipedale and longicalcar) also like light, not shade. Your plant will probably be okay in lower light for the time being, but if I were you I would slowly introduce it to higher light levels (somewhere between cattleya and vanda light). I have both sesquipedale and eburneum, and both do well with ample water and fertilizer during the growing season, with somewhat lesser amounts of water during the winter when they (for me at least) slow down their growth rates and produce their spikes (although neither ever gets completely dry between waterings). I agree with Leafmite that this hybrid will probably love Miami. If you're lucky your new plant's bloom will have inherited the fragrance of its eburneum parent, which is very much like a strong honey scent (sesquipedale's isn't terrible, just a bit medicinal in comparison). Good luck with your new plant.
Steve

Thank you Steve, I am impatient to move, it seems i will be able to do so much more with my orchids in Miami. It will certainly be easier than here. I can always take a picture of the flowers but i won't be able to share the scent.
