The day has finally arrived
There are orchids (typically NOID phals from the local supermarket) and then there are Orchids (those that you would be devastated to lose and that you would consider rebuilding your house for to keep them happy).
This is one of my Orchids. An Angraecum Magdalenae bought 8 months ago in 'almost blooming size'. I thought for sure I was in for at least a couple of years' waiting, but only a couple of months after I got it, I could see tiny buds starting to develop.
I've been anxiously waiting for these buds to develop and finally opening. Been worried sick that the plant would have bud blast due to pretty extreme temperature variations the past couple of weeks. What a relief and joy to see that she's decided to show me her face and share her fragrance.

Congratulations! It is always nice to see that first bloom. This one is said to be fragrant during the day and even more so at night. Did you find this to be true?

Yes, they are. they have a mild, very nice fragrance that reminds me of jasmine and a bit of spices all in one. The scent reminds me a bit of a noid dendrobium nobile I have.
Love these flowers and I really like the plant as well. So far, very easy to grow in my conditions. Will see how the winter will be though.

It stayed outside in the greenhouse last night and I've only taken it in now, so I'll sniff around and check tonight. Not sure if the change of environment will make the flowers drop, hope not. It's always a difficult decision to make, I find...whether to keep a flowering plant in the greenhouse or display it on the kitchen table and see it all the time (but enjoy the flowers for a shorter time period).

Mine has a while to be blooming size so I have never actually seen the blooms, only pictures. Your flowers are a bit different from what I had anticipated but they are very pretty and I cannot wait until mine will bloom. I hope your blooms last a long time!

I think it's going to open a bit more and become less star-shaped. It is does, I can take another picture. I was just so eager to document the flower, I couldn't wait.
I've seen your plant on a picture here, I think, and I'm not so sure it's too small, Leafmite. From what I remember, your plant looks pretty much the same size as mine.
I'm definitely stocking up on Angraecums the next time I'm buying orchids. Whatever is available, I will take them.

Maybe I am making excuses for my mag not blooming. No idea. I have been just content to watch it grow these past years. I love the form of the plant. The flowers will be a bonus.
The angraecums are certainly addicting!

I meant more that...the wait might soon be over!
Mine is in fir bark, dolomite gravel mix and together with my cattleyas. Lots of light on that side of the greenhouse, and still the leaves are fairly dark green, so I think this plant can take a lot of light, probably also some direct sunshine.
Oh, and the scent definitely pick up in the evening and nighttime. I could smell it in the whole house. It's a wonderful scent! Jasmin/cloves/spices combination.
