Ron, did you happen to get a pic of where the actual spike comes from the orchid?

Beautiful blooms....the color and form on these are exquisite....I have three spikes on my plant last summer and only one managed to open its bloom....
@Josh : the bud starts from the leaf like a button then after a week it enlarges and you see the nectar spur first then the pointy flower bud that is green then turns to white then when it is fully opened it has this amazing tinge of monochrome

Bud, it looks like mine has a new fan starting at the lowest little node so that why I was asking. I don't think that this species grows more fans so I figured it the spike emerging.

Hi Josh,
I didn't get a picture, but Bud is correct. It starts in the interval between the leaves as a rather sharply pointed bump, though the spike did not actually develop for quite a while.

This species does grow more fans. Mine has two. The second one is growing from the base of the bigger fan like a basal keiki. Here are some pictures of mine from emerging flower bump, to bud, to flower stem, and then the flower. Obviously there are more steps in the growing process but this is what I got on my plant right now. It is really interesting to watch the process especially once the bump starts to swell and grow faster. Sometimes these plants can grow flower bumps and then they stall. A few of mine stopped growing. They can start up again though and bloom. I hope this helps!
Flower bump (On the right side of the plant between the two leaves. It's kind of hard to see)
Bud emerging from sheath (First flower on the newest fan)
Flower stem
Flower (It is a few weeks old)

Then mine has to be growing a new fan. It literally looks like a new leaf and not a sheath. Thanks a ton Wynn Dee!

Your welcome! Can you post a picture of your new growth? My plant came with the two fans so it would be interesting to see what it looks like when they start growing. New fans are great too because your plant is getting bigger, stronger, and can bloom from both fans!
