Aeranthes Grandiosa questions
Default Aeranthes Grandiosa questions

Hi!
Last sping, I bought two just deflasked Aeranthes Grandiosa (grandflora x ramose). I really haven't been able to find much information about them. I have no idea how large they get, how many years from flask to flower, and if they will have fragrant flowers. I don't really even know the lighting or temps they need. So far, since they were tiny, they were kept pretty shaded. Now, they are about the size of a neo. Does anyone know anything about these or where the information can be found? Thanks to anyone who can help.

Here are snippets of little bits of information I found:
Part of the Angraecinae subtribe, it’s related to Angraecum sesquipedale, the “Darwin’s Orchid” that I featured awhile back. This plant is a Madagascar native with long spikes with spidery-looking, small flowers…butterscotch-like fragrance. Its blooms open at night and usually in succession over a long period of time. Apparently this orchid is easy to grow indoors at home, needing low light and medium to warm temperature.
Madagascar has only two seasons (monsoon rains [as much as 4 months of flooding rains] and very hot dry summers) you have to be generous in watering this plant. It feeds and drinks a lot.

since it is just a seedling, you can pot it in a seedling mix; but this can get big like the parents grandiflora and ramose...with lots of big robust roots...maybe 12 to 15 inches tall...flowers in about 2 to 3 years

Thanks, Bud,
This explains quite a bit. I have the little guys in lava rock and net pot, sitting in bowls with water on the bottom. They are in a shaded place on my shelves as I had no other space for them. They are very tolerant of watering (or forgetting), low humidity, and temperatures. The seedlings were so amazingly tough. I think I have stumbled on a winner. I might just need to find another type of these. They are really growing at a nice clip compared to the other angs. Thanks, again!

Pot them in a paph or african violet mix and they will grow like weeds.
