Our Aerangis brachycarpa 'Joanna' CHM/AOS just received the Fred Hillerman Award for 2006. The attached is one of my own, not the AOS award photo.

Sorry to be ressurecting an old thread, but I thought I'd point out that the plant in that photo isn't aerangis brachycarpa, but is most likely aerangis distincta. The flower shape is quite different from brachycarpa, and almost identical to distincta. In addition, the lateral sepals of the flowers in the photo are not reflexed enough to be brachycarpa.

Not sure this really matters, or if anyone really cares, since you mentioned that this plant succumbed to conditional changes (which is a real tragedy - it was a beautiful plant!!!) but just in case anyone was wondering. This photo comes up on google searches for aerangis brachycarpa, and I wouldn't want anyone to be misled.

If Joyce's descriptions are correct, then I feel that Lourens Grobler's photo on the IOSPE entry for aerangis brachycarpa may also be incorrect.

Some of these aerangis species look quite similar and can be tough to ID. Here is aerangis brachycarpa in bloom...I got this plant from botanica, and they have a photo on their website too.

We bought this plant as Aerangis splendida. we had to have it identified to support the award. We sent pickled flowers to Stig Dahlstrom who returned the verdict that identified our plant as brachycarpa and that is how the award is recorded.

Had we sent pickled flowers to another taxonomic authority, that person may have come up with something different.

Sadly, the plant suffered the 'award kiss of death' and we haven't been successful in finding another to replace it. We're told that many people bought the plant named splendida as we did and the seedlings originated with Lourens Grobler.

Your input and comments are appreciated.

If only Lourens was still exporting seedlings, the things we would have here in N. America!

I don't mean to beat a dead horse and feel free to ignore this if you find it trivial, but since so many people frequent OB, I figure it might be good to just have clarity on this issue if the information is indeed out there. Here is a 2009 report from the AOS that supports the name change to Aer. distincta...if you search for "Aerangis brachycarpa 'Joanna'", under the contested awards task force, you can see that it is suggested this is distincta, although approval from the board is still required.

I suppose this is good news, since there is distincta now available on the market (randomly on E-bay, Orchidweb), so you can replace your plant, as well as brachycarpa (from Botanica). Now if only the true splendida would become available, we would all be ecstatic.
