Angraecum in moss at Botanic Garden. Is that OK? Male
Default Angraecum in moss at Botanic Garden. Is that OK?

Hi
I saw an Angraecum sesquipedale in bloom at the Brooklyn Botanic Garden.
I was surprised to see it was potted in moss. Not just a top layer but the whole pot was with moss.

I am attaching photos.

I just got 2 Angraecums from Oak Hill and they are in bark.

I am considering the moss in a net or a clay pot that I like better than just plain plastic.,

What do you guys think? I grow on my window and / or under lights. Apartment building so low humidity and hot winter central heating. I sometimes use a vaporizer but raises the humidity only temporarily. I killed an Angraecum in the past and here at my place Encyclias seem to be the easiest.

As long as they get to dry out before watering they should be fine.

Also, its quite certain that its collared, leaving a recess between the moss and the bottom of the pot.

I have alot of Angraecum, and Aerangis. Most are mounted in my Windowsill - my Angraecum Sesquipedale is potted in coarse perlite/sponge rock/charcoal - NO bark. Outside of my Neofinetia falcata orchids, nothing does well in Moss for me. Too much root rot.

Thats a nice specimen. These people at botanic gardens know what they are doing. In their conservatories, even though its nice and warm and moist they have a lot of ventilation that prevents problems. I'm always jealous of their conditions.

I went back today, the moss felt dry when I touched the pot. the blooms are fading. But yes great large plant. They have some huge clumps of Ang eburneum maybe 8 ft tall, a tangle of keikis. one of those by the window seem to grow opposite of it... maybe too much sun through the glass.

regarding my 2 Angraecums from Oak Hill, the bark does seem not too fresh. Would coconut fiber in a net pot with a collar of moss on top be OK?

A botanical garden would most likely have perfect humidity and perfect light. With those conditions they could probably grow in any medium. Your experience with orchids under your growing conditions would seem to be more important than what other growers are doing under vastly different environmental conditions. That is deffinately a beautiful plant in the picture. Good luck.
