Default Angraecum x Doritaenopsis

Hi Everyone

I am staring new thread here for the Angraecum x Doritaenopsis hybrid as I think it belongs more in this catagory. I will put a link to this in the original thread. The original thread is at http://www.orchidboard.com/community...um-x-phal.html

The originator of the hybrid Tsai, Chi-chu kindly emailed me photos and information for the readers of this forum.

"Dear Brett
I am very glad to offer the information of this hybrid to you. In the genetic background of the hybrid, the mother and father parents are Angraecum sesquipedale and Doritaenopsis Ruey Lih Beauty, respectively.

Sincerely,

Tsai, Chi-Chu"

I think it is interesting to see the dominance of the Doritaenopsis in the hybrid. Looks interesting though.. I wonder if it will be fertile and cross back.

Brett

It's nothing from the sesquipedale parent, the spur has disappeared, the long lip too, the thick substance seems lost, the irregular leaf tip disappeared... everything has been dominated by the Doritaenopsis parent!! What a crazy and interesting hybrid!!!
It is registered as Chouara Kaohsiung Dream

That is weird! Thanks for posting this, Brett! Didn't expect this at all. I'm very impressed by your resourcefulness!

Upon closer inspection of hte photos, it seems like the lip has been significantly altered, although I'm sure the phal hybridizers will hate what the ang parent has done to the flower shape. The parent is your typical run of the mill neon-pink phalaenopsis (very round). It's a pity they didn't choose a more interesting phalaenopsis species as a parent..I can only fantasize what using phal hieroglyphica as a parent would have generated! I wonder what this means in the world of hybridizing...certainly opening doors.

A small part of me did wither away in disgust when I saw this...call me a purist, but it strikes me as somewhat sacriligous, desecrating the pure angraecum like this. Scientifically though it's absolutely fascinating.

I'm still on the look out for an aerangis x angraecum cross. Apparently it exists

Hi Everyone

Actually Calvin, it was not hard to Google Chi-chu and KDARES. I guessed KDARES was an acronym and up it came. I emailed asking the contact to forward the email to Chi-Chu and they did. They only issue was I was often rejected as spam hahha..

Chi-chu has been really kind and informative. I have forwarded this link to Chi-chu.

Chi-Chu has said this is the first blooming and it is hoped that there will be better offspring.

I wonder if we will see more of the Angraecum parents shape. I know that some will say this is not a satisfying result. However, as it is the first plant to bloom and others may be better, we have to wait.

Also, what if the cross proves fertile crossed back to Angreacum? What then. Many great crosses have originated from such beginings. I recall that the early Cattleytonias were at first not well recieved in some areas. Yet look at them now and where that has led.

I am a species fan, but I do appreciate hybrids and the hybridists work. Its a bit of a buddhist approach, but nothing is constant or forever, except change hahah..

Brett

Weve got a dozen or so Angraecum didieri x Vasco Pine River starting to bud. They seem heavily influenced by the didieri in regards to growth habit. I will definitely be excited to see a coerulea shade imparted to didieri shape and multiflora spikes?
