Angraecum eburneum - Orchid Board

One of my favorite species--although something of a pain in the posterior to move around and photograph--is Angraecum eburneum. This one actually produced seven spikes this year, but the first one went out of bloom last week and another one got snapped off when the careless photograph (that would be me) whacked it against the side of the garage as the plant was being moved out to the driveway to photograph. Blooms are long lasting and incredibly fragrant after sunset.

The pot is about twenty-two inches (approximately 56 cm) in diameter. I got the plant when it was already an adult (although not as large as it has since become), so I'm not sure how old it is. It consists of three full-grown growths (I'm assuming they're full grown) that range in leafspan from two feet for the smallest adult growth (61 cm) to forty inches (102 cm) for the largest growth. There are also several "juveniles" and babies. The whole colony consists of around 8 or 9 growths in various stages of development.

Very good growing, Steve. That's one monster of a plant.

I'm thinking about getting one of these sometime in the future.

Carl, given your location, you should definitely get one of these. I would bet that it would do much better in your environment then it does in mine. It's native to the warmer areas of Madagascar, so it tends to do very well for me during our hot and humid summers when I drag it outdoors to a shaded porch (I've read that it can handle high light, but I've noticed that the leaves start to yellow whenever I try to give it more than a few hours of direct early morning light in an Eastern exposure). During the winter months, however, the plant has to make do with intermediate to cool night temperatures in the sunroom (anywhere between 55 to 60 F), which I think might be a little on the low side. If I lived in Florida I have a feeling that it would grow and bloom even better. It grows and blooms well for me here, but I know that during the cooler months I'm not able to give it optimum growing conditions. So by all means you should look for one. I have a large house, and when this thing's in bloom, the scent fills the entire place (I can even smell it down in the basement). Too bad there are no hawk moths native to my area. I would like to see some of them hovering around and pollinating the blooms.
