Angraecum elephantinum dropping leaves

I know occasionally dropping leaves is normal, but this seemed different. It dropped two leaves within a month, which concerned me because thats the number of leaves it grows in a year. Plus it doesn't have that many leaves in the first place. And the leaves browned at the base before falling off while still largely green.

Any ideas why it might've done this? Rot perhaps? I found no signs of crown rot.

Also it looks a bit rough because my cat chewed on it last year.

Hard to tell in the photo, but the medium looks like it might be past its prime... worth taking it out and see what might be going on in the pot.

I would change the medium as Roberta suggests. Angraecums are sensitive to fertilizer build-up and that can cause leaves to drop. If this was an issue caused by fungus, the leaves would drop more rapidly, in my experience.

The medium is around 1.5 years old now so its kinda old but not so old that I thought it would be a problem. There is a lot of algae growth in this pot though. Didn't know that Angraecum don't like fertilizer build up. Makes sense if this is the problem, since I fertilize pretty heavily. I'll repot in fresh media and tone down on the fertilizing.

Humidity is pretty low at 50% (I try to avoid high humidity species), temperature fluctuates around 23C.

Angraecums do need lots of air around roots - growth habit is Vanda-like. When you repot, be very gentle, though.. they don't like root disturbance. So just shake off/rinse off what comes easily and leave any stuck-on old medium.
