Default Dendrophylax sallei X lindenii Flask

Hello. I deflasked a bunch of Dendrophylax sallei X lindenii orchids today! I’ve been buying flasks for a few years now and have great success so I figured I’d give these a try. I’ve had a few leafless orchids in my collection before that seemed very happy. I live in central Florida about three or four hours from the strand where they live so my conditions are similar. I recently added a cloud digger to my greenhouse just in case. Hopefully I’ll have some of these to trade in the future!!

FYI - species should be in lower case.

Are you going to try growing any outside once they get bigger?

@epiphyte78 I plan to move at least half of them outside into a sunny spot with filtered light. I live near a lake here in Florida so my humidity is pretty good outside the greenhouse as well. During the day I get natural 60-70 a good deal of the time and at night everything is covered in dew so I’d guess around 99. Haha. I’ve had a few other leafless species that have done really well outside.

Here in the Los Angeles area I didn't have much success with D. lindenii outside. D. funalis grew great though... until I gave it too much sun. Have you tried funalis?

I haven’t actually. I’ve had fawcettii im sure that’s spelled wrong. My greenhouse stays super humid because I collect a lot of bulbophyllums but I have a sunny spot in there that stays super humid. My problem here is it getting too hot.

A couple years ago I killed a few fawcettii seedlings. My guess is that they aren't as tolerant as funalis.

You have a greenhouse?! Heh. Do you attach any orchids to trees?

I have lots of orchids attached to my trees. Problem is, since most of my trees are in the backyard, there aren't many people who can enjoy the orchids, unless of course I take pictures of them, which really doesn't do them justice.

Lately I've started attaching orchids to the trees where my friend lives. It is a condo type community so the trees are semi-public.

Just now I wondered if I should attach my funalis to one of the trees there. In theory this would mean that if you were ever in the LA area, you could see the orchid growing on a tree whenever you wanted.

Several years ago there was a project to attach orchids to trees at a Miami dog park...

Community Orchid Project - Dog Park Miami

More recently there was a project to attach orchids to some street trees in Brazil...

Orchid project in Brazil

Oh yeah, in Florida there is also the million orchid project...

Fairchild Tropical Botanic Garden > Science & Conservation > The Million Orchid Project

Unlike Florida and Brazil, here in California it rarely rains during the summer, so the orchids on trees need to be watered, which is why I try and focus on the driest growing varieties.

It's hard for me to imagine how awesome it would be to live someplace where orchids on trees wouldn't need to be watered!

Cool! I'm curious to see what the blooms look like and I really can't tell the parents apart.

Who is the breeder?

Do you have any updates? I was thinking about trying to grow this hybrid.
