Just realized I never updated, but I went in a different direction than planned, and it came out great. Partly went this way because I couldn't find the big pieces of lava rock I needed, but I like how this went anyway.
No substrate at all. There's a background structure made of cork bark and granite slabs, covered in Hygrolon, and stuff's planted all over the hygrolon.
