I've grown quite a few porroglossums when I lived on east coast and temps weren't as high... I believe I grew teaguei but can't remember... anyway, porros in generally needed fairly good airflow for me, as do masdies, so I'd shy away from growing them in enclosed containers... imho... there's a a thread on here that discusses orchids that someone here has grown well in totally enclosed no air flower jars, I'll try to find link. I tried a few of them on list to no luck.

your bedroom temps seem pretty good to me. maybe you can get a desk LED lamp for the square glass container for porro and a small computer fan if all else fails?

This particular container is an open-top vase... I guess it's more akin to a pot in many ways, except I am using it to try to culture both the porro and live sphag . Thus, it gets the full benefits of my ceiling fan that my potted Masdies get (everybody sways gently in the breeze). I do have a desk lamp on standby if needed - I would just need to get a bulb for it but it has an old daylight CFL I could use in the interim if necessary.

With catts I don't believe tetraploidy causes sterility... but others can say for sure. I mean they breed with tetraploids all the time to improve future hybrids with catts...

I just killed my aloarii from sboe in spring... think i watered it too much... or something... it rotted... but besides that it wasn't the strongest grower. Gold country has really good stock of that plant, and that one flowers a few times a year. other people with alaorii's only blooom 1/x a year... so for enjoyment purposes I'd go with Gold country's... planning to get one eventually myself.... would not suggest it for a glass enclosure without high light and air flow...

Good to know about the tetraploidy, thank you. I might buy a second one from Gold Country if SBOE falls through, which I think it might - they haven't been very communicative .

The alaorii I won't be keeping in terrariums. I'm not ready to take that plunge with and catts just yet. I am keeping my current alaorii in s/h and will do the same with any new ones.

Why yes, I do . She, however, is not allowed in the bedroom at night and can't get in during the day (door is shut because of the a/c). I learned a long time ago to protect orchids from her when she chewed off a flower spike with buds on it that were just about to open... I had been waiting several years to see that plant bloom .

That's very interesting. Can you tell how the roots are doing now. I would be worried about airflow around the roots.
