Cool Mini-Terrarium for cuthbertsonii...
Default Cool Mini-Terrarium for cuthbertsonii...

Hello.

I'm thinking about buying a small refrigerator (one of them with a glas front) and making it a new home for some dendrobium cuthbertsonii. But there are two kinds of problem about which I think:
1. lighting. How to get enough light in it and this without warming the tank...
2. air circulation... I don't think, it's wise to drill some wholes in the tank and mount a venti in - or am I wrong?

Maybe some of you with experiences in anything like that, may give me some hints?

Thank you.
Regards
naturepath

1. Leds, or T5 fluorescents with the ballast mounted externally.
2. You need circulation and ventilation. A fan inside is circulation, ventilation will require bringing fresh air in and providing for exhaust of stale air. That means holes. Most refrigerators are nothing but an insulated box looking at them from the side. The important stuff tends to be on the back and top panels.

Hey.
Thank you.
LED...
Most refrigerators have only a glass front and the rest of them (top, side, back) is metal. Mounting an external lamp would mean to make it light the tank from the front?

The top and back are where all the tubing and the heat exchangers are located. Drill there at your own risk! You misunderstood about the lights. The lights themselves should be inside, but the ballast or driver should be outside to keep as much heat as possible outside. This will require a hole big enough to run the wiring through.
