HELP moving with my terrarium!
Default HELP moving with my terrarium!

So i have a small collection of miniatures mostly housed in a 10 gallon aquarium that i turned into an orchidarium. nothing fancy. 2 weeks from today i will be moving across the country. we will be driving and we will be taking 8 days to do it (sightseeing, visiting friends and family etc) my question is: how do i get my babies cross country without killing them? do i just stick the whole tank in the car as is and go for it? do i wrap each of them in newspaper and put them in a styrofoam cooler/cardboard box? is there a third option i'm not thinking of? any help would be MUCH appreciated.

I would pack them up into a box as you would do for shipping by mail and just make sure that box doesn't get into too much of a heat and shaking.
It would be less worries during your trip and surely they should survive 8 days in a box just fine.

I'd be inclined to put the whole thing in the car and make sure that it remains cool and shaded as you are driving. Since the A/C will be running temps shouldn't be a problem. Do not put it on a moving truck - you cannot control the heat in the truck and as you go across country in the summer there is bound to be some heat!

I might make sure you keep a cooler stocked with ice too, since this is a summer trip, just in case you're going to be out of the car for more than an hour. Temps inside the car can get a lot hotter than it gets outside.

The move went well! Most of them made it completely unscathed (Brasavolla "Little Stars" even bloomed the day I moved in. ) Two of them I packed too wet and the roots rotted . One didn't make it the other is in "Sphag in a Bag" trying to see if it will push new roots. I suppose this gives me an excuse to buy some new orchids (why have a tank if it isn't BURSTING with minis right?)

I am so glad you didn't lose to many of the orchids and I hope the one pulls through and makes it. For buying more orchids yup that's always fun to do. I just got a nice orchidarium and I am filling it with a few I purchased also. Some from the seedlings I am raising and others I purchased I can't wait till they begin to start blooming and I get to see what I have. Being new to orchids its very exciting.
