Small crockpot for cheap humidifier?

My mother in law uses a small "dipper" sized crock pot as a cheap humidifier solution for the plants in her living room. She has it set on a table next to a large group of them and keeps it filled to the top, on the warmer setting and says it works wonderfully. I'm a little leery about this (fire hazard cuz it's not meant to run that long so constantly? bump it and water goes everywhere?), has anyone ever used this method?

Seems like a small humidifier would do the job at least as well, probably using less energy ...

I agree. I have seen the cool mist evaporative types for under $20 online, or a pharmacies like Walgreens.

Hey, if you think your MIL would appreciate the effort, be a hero of a DIL and buy her a little cool mist humidifier. You don't need to mention the fire risk, just say that it may save her some on her electricity bill (which it probably will).

She's got so many plants I'm almost positive she'd just use the humidifier in another area of the house instead of replacing the crock pot. Some people are hoarders of trash & clothes, she's a hoarder of plants of all kinds, her house and hard is FULL of them.

I am going to have to say and I hate to but, the humidifier would also be more work so she will never do it.

I got a small one from WalGreens and though I do love it I am having a bit of a time keeping it going. I got it to put in my kitchen window for my Masdevallia's but it is still not keeping the humidity up to where it should be.

I am using only distilled water in it but it seems to not want to run 24-7. Also though it takes no filter it does have a wick and I can't seem to find any more. I have one left and it seems to need changing about every 2 weeks.

I would get another one for back up but if I can't find the wick what is the use. I am thinking of trying the tear drop looking one. I don't know if it has a wick or not.

I have an old humidifier that we used when the kids were small, cool air but not an ultrasonic, maybe I need to see if it is around and still works.
