I can order the orbs from Amazon for 12$ for a 3 pack and I think it would be really cool to try to grow some orchids mounted, but I was concerned they might dry out way, way too much this winter. This seems like an excellent compromise and it will look neat too.
Thanks for your help!

I haven't tried orchids in terrariums but if you are looking for something miniature that blooms amazingly well [but not an orchid] you might try miniature sinningias. There are micro minis. I have been growing them for years.

Those are adorable! I'll have to see if I can find them locally. I plan to go back to the nursery where I saw these orbs and talk to their plant gal. I think the guy I spoke to said she was the president of our local OS, so it would be really great to get five minutes of her time for a lot of reasons.

The micro sinningia aren't hard to mail since they are so tiny, so if you can't get them locally you should still be able to get some. i bought one on ebay. You can get them as bulbs and they are also easy to grow from seed.

Here is what I recall. Was using the clear plastic orbs with the little phal sticking out and facing downward (as they grow in nature). Issue was keeping the plat secured into the container. Though I have seen some some with holes that could be used to secure the phal. Could also put a small piece of cork into the orb that the phal could latch on to to anchor it. Also some Sphag in the orb for moisture retention.
If you decide to do it, show us pics and updates on your success

I remember that thread as well, it was Ryan "Pilot" that does this (he lives in Colorado? I think.. Def. out there near you Gemini). I will look for that thread, & see if I can find it...

I tried these with a mini orchid without much success, but I have had two in my bathroom for a year and a half with air plants in them. I've had no issues, they are thriving. Plus, I picked up the air plants (tillandsia) for about 80 cents.

I was considering Dracula Lotax for one of these things. I'm told it will grow beautifully in my climate, but it needs high humidity. So I'm thinking it would be a great terrarium grower. I may choose another style of terrarium tho.

Very cool! I've never seen a variegated phal before.
The globes he's using are much larger than the ones I was planning on, so I may have to rethink my idea. Maybe I'll just try it with the air plants. I'm really new to keeping any sort of plants at all, it might be better for me and my continued interest in orchids, if I keep it simple for now. LOL!
