Default Time to shop

Hi everybody,
After reading and rereading the forum I think I am finally ready to place an order. I recently purchased a exo-terra, the small one 12X18. I am not as talented as many of you so I plan on using the backdrop and growing mounted orchids. Attaching the mounts to the backdrop. I grow most of my orchids in s/h so planned on putting those pellets on the bottom of the tank for extra humidity. I do not have central air so I thought plants that can tolerate NJ heat are best. The structure is easy enough to move wherever I think it will work. I hope in the summer to keep the doors open and a fan close by. Andy's Orchids make shopping so easy. I looked at plants that need low light 500-1500FC and tolerate temps. 55-85/88 degrees. I found Haraella ordorata; Masdevallia floribunda; Bulbophyllum psychoon; Epidendrum nanodes; Gastrochilus calceolaris.
I think I am ready to try something new. My question: with your experience am I on the right track? Will these outgrow the tank very fast? are there other plants that I should consider? can not wait to get started
As always thanks for your input,
Linda

I don't know anything about the Gastrochilus, but the others sound like excellent choices. You should also consider a few jewel orchids for the floor, too many good jewel orchids to choose from, and a shame not to have a few.

Linda, I agree with Andy's as a choice and be sure to seek direct advice from him or Harry, his brother. They are excellent to deal with. Now on the plants, I have mine in a large humid Orchidarium -

The G. calceolaris is the one hanging to right in second row. The plants in first row are Bulbophylum, Two different Cischweinfias and Angaecum florulentum.

I keep my mounts wetter than many folks and experience phenomenal growth and blooms. I think your tank will suit them very well. The wetter you keep it though, the more air circulation will be needed. I run one 3 1/2" DC fan 24/7 inside the tank directly onto the mounts. I also run another 3 1/2" fan through-wall for fresh air exchange during the night when lights and misting system are off.

Enjoy your new 'chids.

I re-read your post and missed a couple questions.

These plants you ordered should stay faily small since you will get them (tomorrow, right?) blooming size. Andy selects pretty large plants where possible. I doubt you will have a problem fitting them in.

Other plants? Well yes... there are hundreds if you plan to keep them in the Exoterra (you'd need a bigger one though ) I ordered for arrival tomorrow Bulbophyllum psychoon, Aerangis citrata and Sedira japonica. The last one is not for the Orchidarium however. The Aerangis citrata really like low light - down in the 500 foot candle zone so should grow well with Bulbos and Jewell Orchids.

Jewell orchids are found though many areas of the US and Rob has a great selection and I am sure he will work with you on selection. His web site has great descriptions. I have 5 different ones myself. They sit on the bottom of the orchidarium under low light and high moisture (well over 90%)

Got C. horichii from Andy and C. sheehanae from our contest orchid vendor (travelling Companion ) Had a few others in past from Andy's but they slowly dwindled away. Not sure what the problem is, but I have lately decided to specialize on mounted orchids only ) No more sphagnum stuff me. My tank is too wet for this stuff (except maybe for Pitcher Plants ) Now that's a thought

Thanks to everyone for your input. I also took Ross's advice and e-mailed Andy's Orchids. I hope to place the order soon. I did look up Jewel orchids. The leaves are beautiful but only found one on line to order. I will keep looking, thanks Rob for the suggestion.
