You know, the guidelines I was following for the temps. . .was still cooler than what I was achieving too! So, those temp guides in this instance, was WAY off.
Yep, go half of the half qty you'd normally use. lol
I LOVE that first one in particular, the Koellensteinia graminea! Running to check if Andy's has one. lol
K, here's the scoop:
Andy's has one in a 4" basket, $26.00
Oak Hills has one is a 2.5-3 pot for $15.00
This presents a real dilemma for me. . .Andy's also has the Dend. senile that I want for $20.00.
What to do. What to do. lol

Definitely go for the Dendro. They are just so different. Mine has really adjusted well to his new home (his name is Harry).

Ross,
Andy's mentioned that it was starting to lose it's leaves. . .for its winter rest. Have yours started doing that too? Wondering if they need the rest in a tank?

Get it anyway. Mine is still in active growth and I suspect when the canes finish growing they will begin dormancy as well. Mine is not in a tank, it's out in a south-facing window so it dries out over the day, then I water it in AM. I suspect you should plan on growing it dry with daily waterings. Call Andy's and ask him or Harry what they recommend.
By the way, a 4" basket plant will be much larger than the 2.5-3" pot and worth the difference in price based on maturity. Ask them about that one in a tank. I havein't had a huge success with stuff potted in my orchidarium except for the Maxillaria (which loves the light and humidity) and the Dendro aberrans which needs high humidity). Can't tell ya on the basket one, but I'd bet he will recommend against the tank for the senile. Let us know what he says.

Sue, I'm so sorry to hear that the Masdies didn't work out for you! One thing to keep in mind, the Masdie hybrids are normally a lot more tolerant than the species. So if you ever want to give it a go again, maybe try one of the hybrid crosses?
Just for reference, my temps rarely get down to the recommended 'guideline' temps for the overnight lows. Certainly they don't get much below 60F overnight in the summer. Summer highs don't get much above 70F, though. I definitely do not fertilise very much, though my plants are growing in a much lower light environment than what you have in Florida - so my theory is that they really can't use a lot of fertiliser.
Though, now, I can't wait to see what you get for the tank! I agree with Gwen, that Koellensteinia graminea is really great! Nice choice!
Gwen, I'd go with the one from Andy as a travelling companion for the Den. senile... and you've got to get the Den. senile!

Many thanks Ross & Shakkai, your suggestions are greatly appreciated.
I'll definately go with the Dend senile and the larger Koellensteinia. I've got a good place for these two at work. But that's only two orchids, one must have and only one TC. . . I really need one more TC. lol
I'd like to try a leafless something or other. . .maybe not a ghost orchid but maybe something like a chiloschista? But I also really like the Dend jacobsonii and the Harella odorata. . .crap-o, I love them all. lol

Haerella odorata is a MUST-HAVE!!!
To quote a good friend...
"Do it, do it, do it"
The Den senile is a great one too. I got mine from a friend and it wasn't doing too well for the longest time. It has finally come out of it's pouty period and is looking great. Hasn't started losing leaves yet...I don't start putting them down for their winter rest until the first week of November
Shakkai, thanks for the info...I'll keep that in mind. I just tend to go for species
Ross, thanks for mentioning the aberrans again! I've been wanting one and this would be the perfect time to do it

Sue, I tend to only look at species when I'm looking around as well... but if its a way for you to grow Masdies, then its worth a shot!
Gwen, if you can find a Chiloschista, I'd go for it - they are really neat. Mine has reddish-orange root tips, which makes it interesting to look at even without leaves.
That said, the Den. jacobsonii would look great with your collection at work, it almost looks like a bonsai forests with very dark canes. (I've even tranplanted mine into a shallow bonsai type pot.)
OK, so that should be Gwen sorted... now Sue, what else are you going to get?!?!
