Default Light Dimmers

I recently saw a dimmer that is used for mimicking the natural sunrise and sunset for lights. Is this something that can be used with all lights? I thought it would be neat to have something like that, but wasn't sure if it was necessary for plants like it is for some reptiles and amphibians. I would post a link but I forgot what website I found it on, I thought it was on the Black Jungle Website but now I can't find it.

I don't know about whether this is something that would make a difference for plants (all of mine are grown under natural light, so no experience with this sort of thing) but I do know that they sell alarm clocks which do this. It seems that people are much happier when they light increases gradually as they wake. Maybe that explains why I don't do mornings very well!!
