Default Air Stones and Air Diffusers

I still can't seem to keep my air stones and air diffusers working in my orchidarium. I have tried both, and the air diffusers seem to work better, but stop bubbling after a short while. My rubber lining tray won't hold enough water to completely submerge them so I am sure this is the problem. Are they really something I need? Are they just for humidity or for keeping the water in the liner from getting yucky, like it does. Any suggestions? I didn't get the sponge that was supposed to come with the set up, would this work in place of the air stones for humidity? If so would any regular sponge work? I don't have much space or hight to work with. TIA!

Hi Becca!

when using a sponge you can push the air through something moist even when the water level would be too low for having an air stone submerged. as you said they won't bubble when partially submerged as the air will take easier way out. if you want you can try with other sponges, i would recommend organic, "real" sponges as they would provide better water-wicking abilities than most synthetic ones, i believe.
the surface agitation you can get with air stones would probably help keeping the water less murky. at least a bit. whether they're really needed for keeping up humidity depends on your RH levels. i would assume they won't really make a big difference unless your orchidarium is pretty small or the air pump(s) really powerful. maybe try running the tank for 24-48hrs while monitoring the humidity levels more carefully?

Becca, I don't think they are serving an important purpose. Wet sponges will do same thing only better.

I just buy cheapos at a "dollar store". They come several in a bag. If they get green and algae covered, soak in bleach and wring out. Don't get the bleach on the 'chids though.
