Planning on making a wardian case, what 'chids do I want to put in it? Female
Default Planning on making a wardian case, what 'chids do I want to put in it?

I found a lovely page about making a wardian case out of old picture frames (here, if anyone is interested), and am very eager to make one myself. I have never grown orchids in a terrarium/wardian case before, and was hoping I could get some advice on what 'chids will grow best for me.

I was planning on altering the case to add a bottom, which would make it more enclosed. I was thinking of growing mounted orchids, with some companion plants in the bottom, planted in soil. I will be moving to AZ soon, where it is obviously very hot and very dry. However the case will be in the house, maximum daytime temp of 80*, minimum nighttime temp of 62*. Should I get cool growing orchids? How do you regulate the temp in a terrarium?

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

I've never done it myself so can't really advice, but I believe that most things in the Pleurothallid alliance like plenty of humidity and so would do well.

If I was going to do this I would think about Masdies, Lepanthes, Pleurothalids etc. As I said though I've not really tried it so maybe others will have better ideas.
