I prefer to use small refrigeration fans in all of my growing cases as the air circulation is a lot stronger. They are 240 volts and are totally waterproof as they are used in industrial refrigeration to pull cold air through the evaporator and across the food within the fridge or freezer.

One of my concerns for any member who is attempting to set up a terrarium for orchids is with regards to using computer fans. They are not waterproof and we all know water and electricity do not mix!

Rsfrid, I just tried it (3 times!!!), and you're right!! It's definitely too cool!! I hope I don't make it too humid in that tank pushing that button too many times! ha ha

Restrepia, good points!! I'll have to ask my boyfriend about that. I'd like to think he wouldn't have set it up for me if it was going to be unsafe. He has friends in the AC/refrigeration business -- my boyfriend's a plumber -- and see if maybe we can get our hands on small refrigeration fans. Thanks for pointing it out!

Barbara, if you want cool think Thermoelectric Modules I have a Peltier cooling unit in a cigar humidor and it works flawlessly! For me, I would just move tank to basement for summer (or somewhere cool) and let orchids adjust! They are pretty adaptive. If you want advice on peltier cooling units just ask away.

I agree to a point except the low voltage gets arounds the waterproof issue (IMO). 12 volts is not generally an issue and I can tell you from long experience, it doesn't burn out or cause an issue.

I'd like to make a second point. My 12 volt PC fans make a strong breeze as you suggest in your posts. I have mine installed inside the tank with no outside air (unless I turn on a second fan) and they move the leaves constantly. I have NO mold and NO bacterial growths and orchids are doing reat. The fans get subjected to total emersion in water vapor from misters and have no problems.

got my new pump from mistking, and this thing is the ISHT!
Way quieter than before, and the mist looks nearly the same. also has a quick disconnect for the power supply. WAY TO GO MARTY! this really is the best "mist making" pump ive ever used, and easily the quietest.
