Default heated propagator for orchids

can this be done - maybee use a try with stones and wather for the bottom and a fan inside for cirkulation and a Thermostat controler with a Sensor to control the heat?

and then place it with light from the outside

is this a bad idea?

I've been thinking about this too lately. I wondered if I could use a fish tank heater to heat the water in the tray, which I would lay out with LECA (expanded clay pebles). I think it's possible but considder it too risky as the water evaporates. Maybe you can think of other options?

What can be done is heat water with a fish tank heater and pump the heated water thru a water hose. This water hose could be used to safely heat an enclosure, besides this could be a way to cool and enclosure (of coarse not when you you the heater LOL).

I've been looking for ready made propagators with a heat mat. Can't find them in this season. An other option is a heat mat that is used for heating a terrarium or give warmth for other pets (for instance like after surgery)....

I have thermostat that can control the power on/of, I found it in a store that sold aids for whelping dogs/cats.

Bye Nicole

i was thinking of maybee getting this one TilbehØr - sorry the text is in dansh - but on english it says: With a height of 46 cm throughout the Grand Top propagator and perfect for winter storage of plants. Equipped with heat mat and a digital thermostat for precise temperature control, 0-40 ° C. aluminum frame and UV protected by heavy plastic sheeting with easy opening. Bottom of steel mesh. 65 W Protection class IP X4. Target 76 x 40 cm, height 46 cm.

I would then cover the bottem steel mesh with a large container with stone and some water for humanity - and put the plant on there. and add a pc-fan for air-cirkulation. and ad some light inside - i can easy fit two 18w fluencent light in there.

maybee this is a good idea ???

You wrote to me in a private message that you would grow Phalaenopsis in these. Mine do very well with avarage humidity of 40% in the summer and for the Phal's I do nothing special to raise humidity.
I think that with this tunnel you mainly provide heat for the root zone, wich is benificial especially in the winter but then again... a single heat mat in the window sill or on a bench (under lights) could provide you the same... or what other do in colder climates: styropor mats or cork mats on the window sill so that the cold from the sill doesn't pull into the pots.

I don't know if you need that extra equipment for Phal's but if you have lot of money to spent it would be a nice equipment for young plants. For seedlings just of out flask it would be great!

I think the internal height and the height of adult plants conflicts with building lights into it. Oh and this plastic cover (I have a balcony greenhouse from the prolly the same brand), I don't thin it can with stand much heat from for instance the ballast. It would melt easily.
