question on soil drainage in viv.
Default question on soil drainage in viv.

im about to start a orchid in a viv. and i was wondering the best way to do it. should i put it in a small pot with orchid mix and put another substrate around it?

i was also thinking about putting clay balls in the bottom of the tank and then orchid mix on it, so it has some drainage and i would be able to see how muich water is in the bottom.. any ideas or thoughts?

Though I haven't grown it myself, Howeara Lava Burst 'Puanani' seems to not enjoy wet feet very much- if that's the case then I wouldn't use clay balls under the substrate, as it will wick the water back up into your orchid mix (presumably bark). You may want to try the egg crate method for this. I've gone both ways. and find that one has more control over the moistness of the substrate with the latter method.

If you want to make drainage holes and perhaps fit a bulkhead for a pipe, you can get a glass cutter (I guess will do wood) from Glass Hole Cutters - Glass-Holes.com dope aquarium stuff
