How to create an orchid aquarium? Female
Default How to create an orchid aquarium?

Hi everyone!

I'm looking, in the future, to create my own orchid aquarium... I have some aquariums waiting in the basement so that's good.

I would like to know an easy and cheap way to make an orchid aquarium. I want to look realistic (not only orchids on display put more like a miniature landscape).

What material do I need?

What orchids (on a limit budget) could I put in?

I would also like to have a mounted orchid in it. So how do I mount an orchid ? On a rock or on a piece of wood??

Thanks for your answers!!

Hi!
Your post would require a very long, complex answer(s).
If you will do some searching from the front page of the OB you will find many posts/discussions on what you want to do.
Do some research and come back with specific question(s), one sublect to a post is best.
Al

There are so many different ways to put one together, it would be a good idea to read through the threads in this forum (Terrarium Growing). You can also type the word terrarium or orchidarium into the Search engine here at Orchidboard.

Be prepared to see some awesome stuff!!!

Hi Milui,

Al and Sue are right, you can go just about any direction you want so a little digging here will give you an idea of what's possible. There are a few considerations for any tank of any size and style.

Light, of course, is a hot topic (pun intended). There is a ton to learn and I'm no expert, but this is a pretty essential part of the puzzle. Common aquarium hoods usually don't provide enough light to grow some orchids. Look around in the "under lights" forum too.

Air movement is crucial and often overlooked. Just about everyone who has a successful tank setup has 24/7 air movement inside the tank via a small fan. Mine is a tiny little cooling fan from a decommissioned PC, but you can get creative.

That's about as far as I got - no fish, no gravel, just packed full of orchids. Mine is just a 10 gallon tank with a piece of plexiglass on top (1" gap) and a T8 Shop light resting on top. Very low-tech but its a great place to establish seedlings, picky transplants, and the one or two cooler growers I have.

If one uses a large enough tank, say 100 gal +, a "pool" can be incorporated into the setup. Great for humidity.
