Hijacked or not, it is a very interesting thread. It is so facinating to learn the ways and rules of another country. It's an interesting world we live in.

Wow, I had no idea any one protected their moss that much. You can still use my info for when you buy your moss, which I am glad you will do instead.

Ramon, OMG, why do all the apartments have to be white? OMG!!!

Hi Tindo, actually in parts of europe (especially german speaking regions) people really take conservation very ver yserious, e.g. if you come to Germany, you will see that most public glass windows have prey birds sillouettes on them, in order to scare birds and prevent them to hit the glass when flying, or you can see on some roads siganl that during spring you have to drive slowly as it it a crossing poitn for breeding frogs. There is even a case, where they stopped a highway, because it was planed to go through a region where a protected frog especies was found, and so on...

Just because this is Switzerland Actually, that's a stupid law I am still fighting against, because it was not mentionned in my contract for the flat, and apparently is not applicable in some cantons... (every Canton can be very independent of the other)

What is a Canton? Is that similar to a State? In other words, a local governmental unit?

ah, sorry... Switzerland is a confederation of several Cantons - similar to a estate, but with different laws. For example, there is no President in Switzerland. They have the a representative of each Canton in the "Parlament" and every year one of them takes over the responsibilities of leading it (and that's the guy/lady who most people consider the President of Switzerland in other countries...) Each canton is until certain extent independent ofthe others, but they have the especial agreements of the confederation (like the Star wars story but in a smaller scale )

If you want to get the swiss citizenship you have to apply to you Canton or comunity, and not to a central institution like in most countries. Then, they will call everybody in your community to decide whether you can get the citizenship or not. People are not obligated to take part of it, but actually most do it. Just an example of how the laws goes and how much power each canton has.

Furthermore, you have very wealthy Cantons and not very wealthy ones, but as per the confederation's agreement, each single one has the same power, no matter how rich, large, or populated it is.

Actually, a very interesting system taht works very very good here but, according to me, only because the country is too small, and is hardly applicale in larger countries.

I can back that up! I see those blackbird sillouettes on every single pane of glass larger than a normal window here. I have always wondered why they are so crazy about this. About the frogs, this also happened in my little village where they changed the bus route for a few months because of frogs crossing the road. One day, unfortunately, I saw almost 7 dead frogs squashed on the road.
