What "beginner" orchids for a terrarium
Default What "beginner" orchids for a terrarium

Hello,
I have an empty front-opening terrarium with a footprint of 24 X 18 and a height of 20 inches with two built in fans and a LED that I want to use for Orchids.

My initial plan was to house miniature orchids but there are far more full-sized orchids available. Is my terrarium large enough to house full-sized orchids or should I stick with miniatures?

Regards,
Dan

Not sure you would be able to fit a many larger plants without running out of room first...
I suggest to take a look at Andy's Orchids website, there are many miniatures there that are perfect for terrarium growing. He and his staff are also very knowledgeable and can answer a lot of culture questions by reaching out via by email/phone.

Andy's Orchids is a great source. Another excellent source for miniature orchids is Tarzane Group

A couple you might enjoy, and have reputations for being easy (with the right conditions!)
Haraella odorata
Gastrochilus… japonicus is popular, I have bellinus

I got mine from Andy’s this winter, and they have been happily growing away in my mounted plants area. It’s about 70 at night 80s on summer days, humidity is above 60percent and they get misted daily. Your mileage may vary!

What is easy depends on the conditions inside the terrarium when it's up and running. You won't know what the temperatures will be like until then.
