WW- a friend of mine had a nice crayfish collection in his salt tank until someone got him a puffer....lol

the puffer was less than half the size of the crays when they started to disappear

I don't normally consider the size of a fish when determining suitable tank mates, only the size of its mouth! The largest denisonii doesn't have a mouth big enough to pose a risk to an adult Otocinclus. There are however exceptions to that rule! Leporinus fasciatus are small mouthed pricks!

I consider the size of the fish mouth as an adult AND the temperament of the fish. That’s after all the pH BS, etc. Who knew a ghost knife could get so big so fast!

Sorry if I am hijacking this back to orchids, but this is what I was able to do with a 2.5 gal tank. I flipped it on its side and had some glass cut to make a door. Installed a low profile fan and an Fulval Plant 3.0 Nano light. It houses a Lepanthes uxoria, Lepanthes helicocephala, a few fittonias, some Peperoromia percillata and Pilea glauca. There is a piece of Mayalsian driftwood buried under the moss and fern that the Lepanthes are mounted on.

But to join the hijacked conversation, my family and I have recently become addicted to Youtube fish tank videos- I highly recommend FishForThought, FootheFlowerhorn, and SerpaDesign (though he does more terrariums). Not sure if they are super educational, but we find them entertaining or relaxing.

i think i am going to turn it on its end and make some sort of a running water feature so i can go with really wet orchids and moss and have a reservoir on the bottom.

DirtyCoconuts, he is amazing! On one of his videos he talks about all the art forms he has practiced or been trained in, and the guy is ridiculously talented.

I love his black water Betta tank!

FootheFlowerHorn is just more relaxing to be completely honest- no discussion or talking, just watching someone take care of tank with pretty music.

And FishForThought I just like because he's so snarky, lol.

I wonder about published "life expectancies." My local store The Ocean Floor had an enormous free-standing tank you could walk around, about 10 feet / 3 meters long and high and 5 feet front to back. Among other fish (schools of Madagascar rainbow fish! Wow!) it contained about a half dozen Dennison's barbs almost twice the size of mine. OF sold the tank to a restaurant somewhere. I bought my barbs when they were less than a third their current size, and they are still growing. I underfeed my fish somewhat compared to most people. I've thought of adding more barbs to this tank.

I also have a 55 gallon with two African leaf fish, which are a type of cichlid. I bought them in 2009 when they were under two inches long. They're much bigger now, but still growing. There's one black skirt tetra left in there from a school of 10 acquired about the same time. Those are tough fish but I don't think they live as long as cichlids. I would like more fish in there but the cichlids are predators. They grew up with that tetra so they leave it alone, and vendors sell small fish that would easily fit in a cichlid's gullet.
