Default P pantherina light level

I was wondering if anyone here that grows P pantherina could share their experience with light levels required for this plant to strive? Knowing that's it is closely related to cornu cervi, I was wondering if it needed as high light or if it will do well with less? Looking at orchidspecies.com it seems to need less light then cc.

Asking as I have one coming my way in mid October and need to prepare its place under my lights!

Also trying to figure out if I'm mounting it or potting it.

Thanks :-)

I grow pantherina along-side my cornu-cervi. It can tolerate the same light, prefers the same humidity and temperatures.

Thanks you grow everything in pots? Does it prefer being mounted?

Both of my pantherina are potted. I have some cornu-cervi potted and some mounted.

That is not a matter of the plant, it is a matter of your growing conditions and ability to water it properly.

Thanks Ray for your opinion, however in my experience (and in lots of different sources) some plants due to their growth habits will do better on mounts rather then in pots, and that regardless of my conditions or capability to keep up with watering...

Manu, I'm going to sort of side with Ray here. As an example, cornu-cervi will do wonderfully on a mount if it's watered at least daily and kept in a place where the humidity is about 55%. In this humidity the roots will be fine exposed. However, drop that humidity to about 20%, typical in a house with AC or heat running, and the same plant is going to be most unhappy. Pots are a human adaptation intended to enable a grower to keep roots moister in less than ideal conditions.

In nature, most orchids are arboreal. Sure, you'll find terrestrial orchids, too, and with them a pot makes more sense. But most grow by clinging to tree branches and trunks with their roots, so naturally mounted. This natural habit is why sellers such as Andy's mount most plants. But the same orchid naturally grows in an environment perfectly suited for it. The further we, as growers, remove the plant from a natural habitat, the more we have to adapt growing methods to make up for less than ideal conditions. In the conditions which favor a given plant species, any arboreal orchid will do better mounted, and, in fact, in near ideal conditions the adaptation of putting the plant in a pot will hinder it.

The only orchids I grow are orchids which do well in conditions similar that a Phalaenopsis prefers, especially temperature and humidity - I can easily move a plant to get more light if it can deal with the temperature and humidity. And a whole lot of my Phals and other genera are mounted.

Thanks for chiming in.

All I'm saying is some orchids are better adapted to mounts for reasons such as pendant growth habits and that is a well documented fact (if you are able to provide the other conditions for it to strive, I don't recall asking about them, because I know I'm fully able to provide those) that's all. Im not trying to start a debate. I personally could not imagine potting a speciosa or say a schilleriana, but I know lots do and probably have some success.

I'm very familiar with humidity and the needs in general of orchids. All I wanted to really know was your experience with light and pantherina to be honest and you've answered that question and I thank you for that. I'm not sure why Ray felt the need to provide his comments that had absolutely no relation with my question...

On that note I wish you all a great night and good growing!

Cheers!
