Leafmite - that is a very good point but I won't be able to trace my orchid's origins now.

But you and jkofferdahl got me worried. I don't want to test my sedirea limits or to give it 'chances', I simply want to overwinter it in a best possible way. And I know it was poorly last winter when kept inside hence my idea to keep it out as long as possible.

These days it's 48-50F at night and sedirea doesn't mind at all, it's still actively growing. I don't want to harm it or test it, I simply think it's much happier outside with day/night differences, moving air, sun. But I'll take it in if it gets any colder as you recommend.

I've been following this thread, as I'm planning to order a Sedirea japonica soon. I used to have one (a 'Minmaru') some years ago, but I never experienced winter with it as it died from spider mites less than a year after purchase...

What did you do last winter that it almost died? I'm trying to learn from other people's mistakes.

Minmaru, so high on my wish list...

When it got poorly last winter I put in into a terrarium I had for phal seedlings, with higher humidity, higher temps and growing lights. It didn't go better, it kept losing leaves and roots.
But now I think that my setup was wrong, as I put it there potted while it should be mounted and rescued the way Maryanne described above.

FWIW

I have had mine indoors year round. Phal light, warm to intermediate temps. I grow it conventionally in LECA in a terracotta pot. Blooms reliably without any root problems. In fact, I currently have a pot full of roots.

I have one, but only got it this year. It has been growing along with my other phalaenopsis and I don't plan on treating it any differently to them in winter with a minimum temperature of 16C.

I'm still kicking myself for losing my Minmaru, because being in Europe, I'll never be able to replace it. At got it at the time when Glenn Lehr from NWO was still coming to Europe for a yearly show, and he would send out orchids from there. Now they only ship directly from the USA, $200 min order, and only Neos and Dens...

I may try it in Leca then! I'm afraid of potting it in sphag, in fall/winter it dries way too slowly here. Any photos of your plant?

Camille, just yesterday NWO wrote me they are coming to a Paris show in March'18 and they would be shipping from there! They will be taking preorders from November, they told me to sign up for their newsletter to get all the info.
I'm so excited! Though my favourite Minmaru Shima is so expensive I'd better get winter care right beforehand

A lot of plants grow in microclimates very different from what is recorded at nearby weather stations. Many orchid authors estimate temperatures plants experience because there are no nearby weather stations. Before risking plants at temperature extremes, I try to find out in what ecological niche they live, so I can make a more informed decision.

I've never grown Sedirea. I would try to find lots of weather information for areas where it is common, and also lots of habitat photos showing more than just a plant closeup.

Thanks for that bit of information, you really made my day! Looks like I’ll be contacting NWO for the details and newsletter. I may even go down to that show, I have family in Paris so can plan a visit there as an excuse to go to the show! I hope I'll have more luck with the Sedirea and a new neo this time around, my previous ones always ended up dying (not trying japanese style sphag mounds anymore)

I don't have a recent pic but it's this plant.

The Japanese for this species is Nagoran. I may be mistaken but I believe it is found around and named for Nago city (26.5915° N) on Okinawa Island. I doubt it gets down to 40°F.
