Phaleanopsis pulchra

I bought a Phal. pulchra in spike from my society auction a couple of months ago. The first bud opened two days ago. The blossom is amazingly waxy and the color is incredibly vivid and strong. I'll try and get a photo up.

The flower is facing down. I'm looking at pictures on the internet and it is hard to tell, but it looks like that might be a fairly common way they present?

I had read that it was fragrant, but so far I haven't detected anything. I've checked throughout the day. Doe it come later?

I've got a couple more buds coming up, so I'm excited to see what it does.

Anybody have experience with this species?

cant detect any scent on my pulchra but the lueddemanniana close by is scented.

they're closely related afaik so I think the pulchra should be scented

Phal pulchra is fragrant. That doesn't mean that every plant will be fragrant, and fragrant plants can lose the fragrance under less than ideal conditions. Also, if this is the plant's virgin bloom it may not be fragrant this blooming but will be next time.

Thanks for the reminder about variability. Fingers crossed it is just that it was repotted and moved and stuff and such.

Try to raise humidity by misting the plant and bring it in bright light it should help with the fragrance...

First, misting will do VERY little to raise relative humidity. You need a humidifier to raise it significantly. The amount of moisture put into the air by a spray mister is not even a fraction of what is needed; all it's going to do is get the leaves wet.

Second, you don't want to put a pulchra, or any other Phal, into bright light. Bright light, for starters, will cause the plant to use a lot more moisture. More importantly, though, Phal pulchrais NOT a bright light plant. Brighter light isn't going to increase fragrance, but could cause damage to the leaves.

I was referring to this for the fragrance, not growing conditions. And to clarify further, don't expect this to boost fragrance in permanence, but it might help for a few minutes. Bright light doesn't mean direct sun. Humidity and sunny day definitively helps with the fragrance vs a dry cloudy day... At least in my experience.

Are you for real? Having a bad day there?

Listen you got to read between the lines. Bright light I mean say early morning sunshine for a few minutes. Mist some water in the air on and around the plant, take a dead breath, inhale, it will definitively help with smelling a fragrance, and it's really relaxing, you should try it

I grow mainly phals, almost only species, never burnt a plant. We probably just don't have the same definition or bright light! I'm sorry if anyone burned their plants because of my comment, it was not my intention. Have a good day!
