Default Phal. corningiana

My corningiana is, I think, proof of the durability of Phals. I bought the plant last summer. When it arrived I didn't have any potting material and it seemed happy enough in the sphagnum and plastic cup, so I broke every rule I profess and left it be. (I've grown enough in sphagnum that while I don't like it in these pots I can do fine.) The plant seemingly ignored my abuse, and has produced numerous new roots and a nice, big leaf, so I wasn't surprised when it spiked - though I now have two spikes which does surprise me a wee bit. Peter Lin describes the fragrance as "bubble gum", and while I find the fragrance to be sweet to me it's far more pleasant; two open flowers are producing enough fragrance to fill my plant room:

That's really nice, everything about it, colour, shape, lip, scent - I love them all.

I kept the one I have of this, I got it from Peter 1.5 years ago and I hope it was a seedling because it's taken its sweet time to do anything. It finally threw a spike this winter which has just sat there - nearly everything either went into stasis this winter, or crashed and burned - but I have hope that with longer days and more light it will resume. And then bud. And then not blast. And then bloom

This one is from Peter as well.

Though we often say that Phals don't have a dormant season, some sure do slow to less than a crawl in the winter. Hopefully yours will quickly get back to the business of growth and bloom.

For me, things don't dry out as fast in winter; and I'm not growing under lights so between day length and cloud cover they get much less light; and because of all that I cut way back on feeding, feeding about every other time and using .25 instead of .5 concentration.

I fertilize pretty much every watering at about 20-25% of the recommended dilution strength. While I grow a lot of my plants under light I do adjust the light-period seasonally. My plants are in my house and I run the furnace in winter, knowing that doing so dries things a lot MORE quickly than in the summer, so I run humidifiers. Your success with other plants might indicate that your growing conditions just aren't overly suitable to Phals.

Yes, or maybe I'm overfeeding 8 months out of the year and underfeeding the others! LOLOL

Thank goodness I have success with some orchids
